Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMA)

When your crew works in or near live traffic, a Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) is the barrier between a moving vehicle and your people. It absorbs the energy of an errant vehicle’s impact, protecting both the work crew ahead and the driver behind.

As an authorized TrafFix Devices Scorpion distributor, Quality Truck Bodies brings the industry’s leading attenuator together with 50 years of in-house body building and upfit. We don’t just supply the unit — we mount it, wire it, and can deliver a complete, work-ready crash truck. Because every unit is ordered and built to your specification, you get the right configuration for your trucks, your speeds, and your jobs.

Two Ways We Can Help

Build a New Attenuator Truck

We start with your chassis (or help you spec one), build the body, and integrate the Scorpion TMA, lighting, and arrow board into a single, turnkey unit. One vendor, one build, one point of contact — delivered ready to work.

Add a TMA to Your Existing Truck

Already have the truck? Bring it to us and we’ll mount a Scorpion TMA to it. We handle the mounting plate, actuation, wiring, and lighting integration so your existing fleet vehicle becomes a compliant crash truck.

The TrafFix Scorpion Lineup

Scorpion II TMA — Truck Mounted (TL-3)

The flagship truck-mounted unit. Per TrafFix, the world’s first MASH-tested, passed, and eligible TMA, rated to TL-3 at 62.5 mph. It has one of the shortest deployed lengths on the market (about 13 ft) and a low minimum host-truck weight of 15,000 lbs with no upper limit, so it fits a wide range of trucks. The open-cartridge design reduces wind resistance for better fuel economy at highway speed.

Scorpion II METRO — Truck Mounted (TL-2+)

A MASH-tested and passed TL-2+ unit for posted speeds up to 50 mph — ideal for cities, counties, and urban districts where TL-3 isn’t required and a more compact, lower-cost option makes sense.

Scorpion II Towable Attenuator — Trailer (TL-3)

For crews that want to protect a work zone without dedicating a truck body to it. Per TrafFix, the first and only MASH-eligible TL-3 towable attenuator (FHWA letter CC-138), approved up to 62.5 mph. It tows behind a support vehicle with a standard pintle hook and frame plate — no special truck modification — and its integrated electric brakes engage automatically if the trailer separates.

Why a TMA — and When It’s Required

Many state DOT and federal work-zone specifications require a crash-rated attenuator on shadow and work vehicles in specific situations — particularly mobile operations and lane closures on higher-speed roadways. Beyond the requirement, a TMA is simply the most effective way to protect a crew and the traveling public from rear-end impacts.

Common applications include paving, striping, and line-marking operations; mobile maintenance and sign crews; lane closures and shoulder work; and sweeping, pothole patching, and utility work in live traffic. If you’re unsure whether your jobs require a TMA, we can help you match the unit to your agency’s specs.
